Sylvia Williams Greene, is an 80 year old mover and shaker, activist, artist, and leader in the Freedman(predominantly African-American neighbourhood) of Lenoir, North Carolina. Because of her efforts, she has triumphed at actualising a project to establish landmarks throughout the Freedman Community; landmarks that commemorate the contributions of once flourishing and successful African American businesses. With the help of a special committee and the attention of Mayor Gibbons, May 22, 2015, marked the groundbreaking ceremony of the Freedman High School Memorial Celebration.
The Freedman High School Memorial Celebration Tribute of Lenoir, North Carolina, which occurred on May 22, 2015, is a preliminary process that kicks off a movement to recognise and historically confirm via landmarks the significance of the contributions of the African American population of Freedman, Lenoir, North Carolina. In earlier times, Freedman was the home of successful, flourishing African American owned businesses.
