New book about a black Londoner born before the first world war being launched at Peckham Library (26 June) & National Portrait Gallery (19 July)

Stephen Bourne’s new book Esther Bruce – A Black London Seamstress: Her Story 1912-1994 (History and Social Action Publications) provides a first-hand account of the life of a black Londoner in the pre-Empire Windrush years. At the event Stephen will talk about his adopted aunt who lived through two world wars and met the Jamaican nationalist Marcus Garvey. Copies of the book are available by sending a £5 cheque made payable to ‘Sean Creighton’, 6 Oakhill Road, London SW16 5RG.

Stephen will also be talking about the other black Britons represented in the National Portrait Gallery collections.
