‘My Friend Fela’ Screening + Q&A With Director Joel Zito Araújo (via Skype) Saturday Feb. 8, 2.00pm @ BFI NFT1. £6.50. |
BFI‘s African Odysseys programme continues with the screening of ‘My Friend Fela’ followed by a Q&A with director Joel Zito Araújo, hosted by Kunle Olulode, film historian, cultural critic and broadcaster. Expect more special guests to be confirmed. Last year, I (BritishBlackMusic.com) raved about ‘Hero’, the superb Ulric Cross feature docu, particularly because it focused mainly on his pan-African work. And this year, as our (BritishBlackMusic.com) programming banner is ‘Marcus Garvey/UNIA-ACL 80:100’, we are happy to promote this engaging, award-winning documentary about the influential and outspoken musician Fela Kuti, particularly as it highlights his pan-Africanist perspective. Click here to watch clip and to book. Tickets are an austerity-friendly £6.50. |
P.S. I can’t call Fela my mate, but I recall spending an afternoon interviewing him with him wearing just his briefs. I once saw him and his band, and several of his female singers perform in what used to be our living room. And he was truly at home at the Brixton Academy still playing coming up to midnight, when I had to leave because I didn’t want to miss my train!
P.P.S. If really want to attend screening, but can’t afford it, I’m happy to offer my spare single ticket in this impromptu compo: click here to name the African name Fela substituted for Ransome? Closing date is Saturday Feb. 1, and winner must confirm by Monday Feb. 3 that they can use ticket, or else it will be passed on to runner-up!
