| BFI‘s African Odysseys programme continues with the screening of ‘My Friend Fela’ followed by a Q&A with director Joel Zito Araújo, hosted by Kunle Olulode, film historian, cultural critic and broadcaster. Expect more special guests to be confirmed. Last year, I (BritishBlackMusic.com) raved about ‘Hero’, the superb Ulric Cross feature docu, particularly because it focused mainly on his pan-African work. And this year, as our (BritishBlackMusic.com) programming banner is ‘Marcus Garvey/UNIA-ACL 80:100’, we are happy to promote this engaging, award-winning documentary about the influential and outspoken musician Fela Kuti, particularly as it highlights his pan-Africanist perspective. P.S. I can’t call Fela my mate, but I recall spending an afternoon interviewing him with him wearing just his briefs. I once saw him and his band, and several of his female singers perform in what used to be our living room. And he was truly at home at the Brixton Academy still playing coming up to midnight, when I had to leave because I didn’t want to miss my train!
