Baroness Patricia Scotland Makes History as 1st (Black) Woman Secretary General of The Commonwealth of Nations!
Nominated to discuss her life and career on the ‘Inspiring Women’ segment of BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour by Grace Ononiwu, the Baroness Patricia Scotland of Asthal, PC, QC, aged 60, took up her newest landmark position as Her Excellency, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations on April 1st 2016.
Nominated by the Hon Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica, the main issue of contention for the appointing Commonwealth Heads of Governments, was her Catholic faith! That’s saying something for a lawyer and politician!
This pioneering barrister, Britain’s first black female Queen’s Counsel (QC), Privy Counsellor (PC), member of the House of Lords (Upper House) since 1997 (life peerage), former UK Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office 1999 – 2001, former member of theCommission for Racial Equality, UK Parliamentary Secretary (Lord Chancellor’s Department 2001-2003), UK Minister of State (Home Office, 2003-2007), Labour attorney general (2007 – 2010), andshadow attorney general (2010 – 2011), obviously rises to any challenge!
