Joan worked at the Social Welfare Studies Centre ‘The Orphanage’, where she eventually was coordinator of two homes for Moroccan children. In addition, she teaches cross-cultural pedagogy and research assistant at the University of Amsterdam. Then in 1997 four women’s empowerment organizations merged decided, by January 1, 1998 Ferrier was director of what became the new Institute for Gender and Ethnicity, in the course of that year was renamed the E-Quality. Previous honors include the award for Black Women Manager 2008 from the mayor of Rotterdam Mr. Opstelten. Ms. Ferrier is the daughter of the late Johan Ferrier, the last governor and the first president of Suriname.

She was included in the Black Women in Europe™: Power List 2010.
